What is Fractures
Fractures, commonly known as broken bones, occur when there is a crack or break in the continuity of a bone. They can range in severity from a simple crack to a complete break that causes the bone to separate into two or more pieces.
What are the types of fractures?
Types of Fractures
- Stable fracture. The broken ends of the bone line up and are barely out of place.
- Open (compound) fracture. The skin may be pierced by the bone or by a blow that breaks the skin at the time of the fracture.
- Transverse fracture.
- Oblique fracture.
- Comminuted fracture.
What are the 5 main fractures?
The following are five common types of fractures that you could run into:
- Stable fracture. This injury occurs when the bone is broken but the halves are still in line with each other.
- Compound fracture.
- Transverse fracture.
- Oblique fracture.
- Comminuted fracture.
The following are common causes of broken bones:
- Fall from a height.
- Trauma.
- Motor vehicle accidents.
- Direct blow.
- Child abuse.
- Repetitive forces, such as those caused by running, can cause stress fractures of the foot, ankle, tibia, or hip.
A broken bone or bone fracture occurs when a force exerted against a bone is stronger than the bone can bear. This disturbs the structure and strength of the bone, and leads to pain, loss of function and sometimes bleeding and injury around the site. Our skeleton is made up of bones.
Fractures most often happen when more force is applied to the bone than the bone can take. Bones are weakest when they are twisted. Bone fractures can be caused by falls, injury, or as a result of a direct hit or kick to the body. Overuse or repetitive motions can tire muscles and put more pressure on the bone.
